I came to Rick’s school by way of the theatre. I have been a dresser on Broadway for over 25 years and have worked with many types of clothing, but of course everything is, by definition, very theatrical. Costumes are designed (and maintained) to be viewed from a certain distance and are often constructed with budgeting constraints, ease of maintenance, and quick changes in mind.
I have long been curious about how to do things the “real” way. And who better to teach me than a real English butler?
When I first spoke to Rick on the telephone and explained my objective, he grasped my job almost immediately. It was clear to me even in that first conversation that he was an exceptionally good listener and that it was very important to him that I learn everything I possibly could. He suggested a 5-day bespoke one-on-one course which would concentrate on the “valeting” duties of the Butler-Valet.
Rick went out of his way to ensure that I got the very most out of my course. In addition to the lessons already included in the syllabus (shoe care, ironing, packing a suitcase, etc.) he researched and scheduled several amazing field trips that were specifically pertinent to my line of work.
I cannot fully express how life-changing this experience was. I learned how things are done on a real, functioning grand estate. I learned the history and tradition of the tasks I do every day. I was able to learn new skills and hone those that I already had.
The most unexpected, and perhaps the most valuable, thing I got from the course came from Rick’s stories. He has over 65 years of experience in his field and was utterly delighted to share his wealth of knowledge with me. I don’t think that I’ve ever met a more generous human being. We spent hours and hours discussing not only the technical aspects of the profession, but also our personal philosophies regarding a life in service.
This experience with Rick has expanded my skill set, my confidence, and my mind in ways that I suspect I will not fully appreciate for years to come.
